Counter stools are useful, flexible seating for smaller homes where space may be limited. They differ from bar stools in that they are shorter, generally between 24 and 27 inches, whilst bar stools are around 30 inches.

When selecting your counter stools, you should first measure the height of the counter, island or tall table you are using them with. There should be about ten to twelve inches of clearance between the bottom edge of the counter and the top of the stool. If the counter is an unusual height, you may need to go for a custom counter stool solution that allows you to choose your own height.

Most counter height tables are 35 to 36 inches in height, however. Unusual heights may occur in older buildings and a 40 to 40 inch table is a bar and should be treated accordingly. If purchasing a counter and counter stool set, then you should choose a height that you and your family find comfortable. Bear in mind that children are best off with the shorter, 24 inch stools.

The advantage of counter height stools rather than bar stools is that they are more flexible. Because of their lower height, they are more comfortable if pushed away from the counter and can be mixed with traditional seating for a stylish look. Some people prefer stools with backs and arms for these purposes, although bear in mind that if your stools have arms, then they will need to be positioned slightly further apart at the actual counter, especially if they are also swivel stools. Swivel stools cost more, but are easier to get in and out of.

Fixed stools are less flexible, but take up even less space and can look very elegant. Although these are more popular in bar stools, they are available at counter height as well. This gives the look of a diner, and in the right home can look absolutely fantastic. These stools generally swivel.

Also worth considering is the amount of upholstery you want. The amount of padding on a counter stool varies, and you should choose what you find the most comfortable. If you have back issues, then you should definitely buy stools with backs on them. On the other hand, if the available space is very small, you probably want backless stools, as they can be slid all the way under the counter when not in use. Backless stools are also easier to stack for storage.

Although the choices seem bewildering, finding the right counter stools is not that hard. It just takes a little bit of thought and time.
